One of the great things about Minnesota is that small towns are still small towns, not boarded up and empty. There may not be much - gas station, bar and grill with their "on and off" sale, library, sometimes a fire department, community hall, hardware store, Legion, lawyer, maybe a bank, and a park or two, usually one dedicated to veterans. In the case of Madelia, an outdoor swimming pool and movie theater.

Stemming from the US Dakota War in 1862, and the relationship between Dakota and settlers, today a great divide remains between Native peoples and non-Natives. We were some of the few white people in attendance. Through my work, both past and present, I try to be respectful, learn, and share when and what is appropriate.
